KATHMANDU, APR 24 - A pall of gloom descended on thousands of Nepali devotees of Sathya Sai Baba after news of his death in India spread like wildfire on Sunday. Some even hoped that Sai Baba, worshipped as god by millions worldwide, would rise from the dead.
"We are hopeful that he will resurrect," said Amar Bahadur Karki, the central coordinator of Satya Sai Centre in Kathmandu. "He has performed miracles. The baba is simply testing our devotion. We will intensify our prayers and call him back," Karki added.
Karki said devotees have started praying, singing bhajanas and the 'Gayatri mantra' and other mantras in all the 186 Satya Sai Centres across the country. There are 44 such centres in the Kathmandu Valley alone.
He said all the devotees across the country will chant Vedic mantras and sing devotional songs for two days.
According to him, many devotees have already left for Puttaparti in Bangalore, India, where the baba's body will be kept in state for two days.
Karki said that the Satya Sai Centres have 30,000 active members in Nepal and hundreds of thousands of devotees.
"Though devastated, I am hopeful that Sai Baba will rise from the dead within two days," Shankar Pradhan, the chairman of the Battisputali Satya Sai Centre, said.
"We will conduct prayers until the baba's body is cremated," Narendra Tamang, the chairman of Patan Satya Sai Centre, said. "Though he is no more, his teachings will always influence our daily lives."
