Nepal U-16 Football Tops The Group; Sets Up Semifinal Clash Against India

Nepalese U-16 National football team performed clinical game to trounce lowly Sri Lankans 6-0 to enter semifinals in the SAFF U-16 Football Championship played at Dasrath Stadium on Saturday.

Nepal and Bangladesh both collected four points from two matches but Nepal topped the group B in better goal difference and set up an exciting semifinal clash with India U-16 team on Monday.

Suman Lama and Rishi Magar struck twice while Rungri Rai and Biswas Shrestha added apiece to ensure high flying margin for Nepal.

It was a lopsided affair to Nepal however the junior Gorkhalis couldn’t show their class in the first half though they dominated the park.

The sky was clear when the match started. Nepalese colts seemed in high spirits seeing thousands of Nepalese football lovers present at the stadium. They started with the bang!

Suman Lama,who looked sharp throughout the match, opened the firing in the 14th minute capitalizing on the err of Sri Lanka goalie, Abdhullah. Suman Lama grabbed the released ball off Abdhulah and provided the lead to Nepal by scoring an easy goal.

With 1-0 up, Nepalese boys increased the tempo. Two wingers; Biswas Shrestha and Bibek Basnet crossed the ball from respective flank but the crosses were not up to the mark. Nepalese boys had to go for lemon break with just 1-0 up.

But, soon after the re-start, the Mother Nature proved the rainy season in ripe. Nepal doubled the tally three minutes after the break when Rungri Rai capitalized the cross off Rishi Thapa Magar in a goal mouth melee .

The rain started to fall heavily after Nepal’s second goal that created havoc on the field. Both team players found it difficult to run with the ball. But, the referee didn’t stop the game.

Suman Lama showed his class in 58th minute with his nimble footwork inside the box who dribble past three defenders before firing in the spectacular shot that kissed the net.

Biswas Shrestha, promising left back, extended the tally in the 63rd minute with his powerful shot from just inside the D-box.

Two goals in two minutes put Nepal in commanding position when Rishi Thapa Magar scored in 68th and 70th minutes respectively. The incessant rain caused more havoc but the time ticked with no intervention of the referee.

The final whistle cheered the rousing Nepalese fans present at the stadium and also to the boys who slithered here and there to celebrate the win!

Group B Leader,Nepal U-16 will take on runner of Group A, India U-16 and Group A leader, Pakistan U-16 will play against runner of Group B, Bangladesh on 8th August.
